Schools in Portugal: Public, Private and International (2026)
Portugal’s education offer spans a free public system that has absorbed a decade of international arrivals, a low-cost private layer, and an international-school belt around Lisbon, Cascais, Porto and the Algarve. The right choice tracks the child’s age and the family’s intended length of stay more than the family’s budget.
The public system
Public school is free, universal from age 6 to 18, and legally obligated to enrol any resident child with a residence address — no long wait for papers. Younger children typically integrate fast: Portuguese immersion plus support structures do the work within a school year. Older teenagers face the harder maths — national exams, subject vocabulary — which is exactly when many families pivot to private or international options.
Private and international: costs and geography
- Private Portuguese schools (colegios): €300–800/month, instruction in Portuguese, lighter classes
- International schools, Lisbon/Cascais belt (St Julian’s, TASIS, Carlucci, CAISL): €10,000–25,000/year
- Porto (CLIP, Oporto British School) and Algarve (Nobel, Vale Verde): €7,000–18,000/year
- IB, British and American curricula all available in the metros and Algarve
One practical note for incoming families: school choice and address are linked — the public school follows the registered address, so housing search and school search are the same decision made twice. Sequence the lease before the enrolment appointment.
