Douro Valley in 3 Days: Quintas, River and the Great Drive
The Douro rewards slow travel: terraces that took centuries to build, roads that curve because the river did. Three days fit the essential river-plus-quinta experience without rushed tastings.
Day 1 — Into the valley
Train from Porto São Bento to Pinhão — the historic double-decker runs seasonally; the regular train runs always, along the same river the whole way. Settle at a quinta, sunset tasting above the bend, dinner on the terrace.
Day 2 — The quintas and the river
Morning visit to two quintas (book tastings; many need reservations), an hour on the river by boat or kayak below Pinhão, the village’s tiled station, and the São Leonardo da Galafura viewpoint before dark.
Day 3 — The great drive
- Rent a car in Pinhão or Régua for the EN222 to Barca d’Alva — Europe-ranking road, stop at every miradouro
- Alternative: the seasonal historic train to Pocinho through the wildest stretch
- Return to Porto by evening train, or overnight in a quinta and drive back Monday
Quinta ownership dreams start on exactly this drive.
