Tomar, Portugal
The Knights Templar city and its Convent of Christ
Tomar was the seat of the Knights Templar in Portugal: the Convento de Cristo — UNESCO-listed — combines a round church built for the Order’s initiations, Manuelite windows that rank among the country’s finest carving, and an aqueduct that still strides across the valley. The town plans its famous Festa dos Tabuleiros around a central square Gualdim Pais laid out in the 12th century.
