Sintra, Portugal
Palaces in the fog forest above the coast
Sintra’s microclimate — cool, wet, fog-fed — made the Serra the summer retreat of Moorish rulers, then of the Portuguese court, who left a skyline of romantic palaces among centuries-old camellias and redwoods. Pena, the Moorish Castle, the National Palace and Quinta da Regaleira sit within a few kilometres of each other.

Living in Sintra
Most residents live in the working towns of the concelho — Rio de Mouro, Queluz, Algueirão — with far lower rents than the tourist villages, trading commute for price. The historic zone itself is largely protected, so buying inside it means select and rare stock.
